Weeks 16 and 17!

Steve Risby5 Sep 2024 - 19:34

Washout then promotions!

The final home game of the season at the stunning Widford ground was a must win for us to have any chance of winning the league. We hosted a very much changed WGC side when we played the reverse fixture, full of experienced players that had clearly played at higher levels before. WGC won the toss and elected to bat and from the off the opener was not hanging around smashing it anywhere and everywhere probably the most unorthodox opener I’ve ever come across Ryan tried his best to contain him but it took Steve to get him with a slower ball bowling him out, great relief around the team. The second wicket built a partnership of 70 before the next wicket fell to Rizzo who btw bowled brilliantly slowing the run rate down and finishing with 7/2/27??Sam was in the attack and trapped lbw bat #2 for 43. Wickets began to tumble with two from Steve and one from Ben we were on our way to keeping the score down but the last five overs they hit 47 finishing on 197. We opened the batting with Phil and Sam and phil took a liking to the opener who was the fastest we seen this season so much so the keeper was almost on the boundary ? Phil crashed him about going at ten an over at one point which led to him being taken off. After 84 partnership Sam was bowled for 29 by the decent leg spinner (Sam’s words) Phil was next to go for a fantastic 55?? which set us up nicely for the run chase. Andy was unlucky getting out playing on. Young George joined Dominic, and he stood up to the returning missile attack and was gaining in confidence with every shot he played he was brave and patient which led to a great 49 partnership putting us well in charge of the game. George went getting caught for 19. Ben came in smashed a couple of fours and out for 15 Steve finished it off in style smashing the ball to the boundary with 5 overs to spare. Dominic finishing 35 not out. MOTM is Phil M with his superb 55 set us on our way??A great game played in a great spirit the oppo were fantastic bunch too. We sat anxiously in the pavilion waiting for updates on play cricket app hoping for a Bengeo defeat the WiFi and data was not playing ball and couldn’t see the result. Unfortunately we didn’t get the result we wanted Bengeo won the game and league congratulations to them? we pushed them all the way and I couldn’t of asked for more from the team we have had a brilliant season and gaining promotion to top it off? Well done and thank you to everyone involved. Final game of the season is away to Datchworth who have kindly put on teas??☕️ for us. It’s a 12:30 start Saturday
The first team travelled to Cheshunt and walked round the impressive looking main pitch to the rather less impressive second pitch with an artificial strip. After losing the toss we were invited to bat first and lost three wickets relatively quickly. Nick and Simon stabilised things with a stand of 70 and then Kyle joined Nick to continue building our score, Kyle being out for an excellent 48 after a stand of 93. By this point we were running out of overs and Nick was getting closer to the elusive hundred, taking a single off the second ball of the final over to move to 98. On each of the next two balls Liam tried to get him back on strike but poor fielding let the balls go to the boundary. After a single off the fifth ball Nick had one chance to score his century and placed a magnificent drive back past the bowler to get there as we finished on 250 off our 40 overs.
In reply Kev and Liam were unplayable, Kev taking two wickets and the required run rate was soon approaching 10 an over. Henry bowled well for three wickets including a stunning catch from Kyle at slip and Dee took a further two, including a sharp return catch. Joel took the last wicket to fall as Cheshunt ended 9 down and just over 100 runs short of the target. The result sealed our position as league winners.
